Unified District Information System for Education is a comprehensive computerized mechanism of collecting information from all schools. The UDISE database is kept in uniformity with all States/UTs in India so that it becomes a national database for education sector. The database contains information like physical infrastructure of the schools, teachers’ details, student details including CWSN (Children With Special Needs) etc. On the basis of this database, planning and formulation of policies for school education is done by Ministry of Human Resources (MHRD), Govt. of India. The same database is also being used by Govt. of Assam for planning & formulation of policies and other govt. initiatives.
Till 2011-12, Database Management of Elementary & Secondary Education was done separately under the name DISE (District Information System for Education) and SEMIS (Secondary Education Management and Information System) respectively.
In the year 2012-13, MHRD-Govt. of India decided to merge the database into a single entity under the name UDISE (Unified District Information System for Education) to avoid duplication of resources and streamline the planning process for education sector as a whole.
The UDISE system contains all the information of all schools (including private schools) – Elementary, Secondary, Higher Secondary and Junior Colleges in a high end database system. It is very important for all schools to submit all information related to schools in a standard data capture format developed by NUEPA (National University of Education Planning & Administration), New Delhi. This data is collected from all schools keeping 30th September of every year as the base date since all admission processes in all schools across India gets over by 30th September. In Assam, the database is being collected by SSA and RMSA jointly every year. Management & Information System (MIS) wing of SSA and RMSA is the core component who is entrusted with the responsibility of maintaining the database and disseminate reports to Govt. of India and Govt. of Assam.
